Waitomo is famous for its Black Water Rafting & Caving adventures. We stopped there on our way to Maketu & were all able to do an activity. I chose to do the Hagas Honking Holes abseiling & caving trip. The reason this trip is called Hagas Honking Holes is because the caves are located on the Hagas farmland and one day the Hagas daughter was driving around the fields. Her car apparently fell into one of the cave holes & the car horn went off & wouldn’t stop. Or so our guides Ryan & Brad told us. The trip was four hours of rappelling down caves & crawling through small holes. Tons of getting soaked (and cold) by waterfalls. It was sweet! I was exhausted after that though.
Maketu – Maori Experience

After caving we drove to Maketu. There we stayed at the Maori home of Uncle Boi. We ate a traditional Maori dinner of salad, potatoes, kumara (sweet potato), peas, stuffing and various meats. Then we watched a Maori haka (dance) performance. The guys then got to learn the war haka, and us ladies learned a poi dance. It was very fun and such an awesome cultural experience. Everyone enjoyed themselves very much. Afterwards we walked down to the beach and sat around talking watching for shooting stars. We had a lovely view of the Milky Way. It was gorgeous. Then we all slept in this huge sleeping hall in the traditional Maori way. Woke up this morning for breakfast, which was toast and Wheatabits (strange rectangles of wheat that you put milk on so they break up and become like a shredded wheat cereal). Then we headed on our bus journey to Taupo.
